Guided tour of the Roman amphitheatre and West Gate of the Roman fort

On Saturday October 24th a group from RAS visited the Museum of London for a morning tour of the remains of the nearby Roman amphitheatre and West Gate of the Roman fort, conducted by MoL Roman Gallery curator Jenny Hall. Visible remains of the amphitheatre, only discovered in the 1980s, can be viewed in the basement of the Guildhall Art Gallery to one side of Guildhall Yard, while the West Gate lies below the high walkway next to the Museum.

After lunch, during which some of us had a tempting browse in the well-stocked bookshop of the Museum, Jenny took us up to the newly refurbished Museum education suite where she treated us to a PowerPoint presentation of finds from Roman London, with a chance to make suggestions for a proposed new Roman gallery at the Museum.

Finally, some of the party had a look round the Roman Gallery itself. This was a very enjoyable and informative day and top marks to Shirley Sell for organising it.
